Registering with a GP After Moving House
Register with a practice near your new home so your care and prescriptions continue without a gap.
Overview
If you've moved outside your current GP's catchment area, you'll need to register with a new practice. Registration transfers your medical records and keeps repeat prescriptions running. You don't need to formally deregister from your old surgery — registering with a new one handles that automatically.
How to update
- Find practices accepting patients near your new address at nhs.uk
- Register with the new practice — many accept online registration; some require a form in person
- Bring ID and proof of address if the practice asks for them
- Arrange to transfer any repeat prescriptions so there's no gap in medication
When to do it
Register soon after you move, before your old registration lapses. New registrations can take up to a couple of weeks to process, so don't leave it if you rely on repeat prescriptions.
If you forget
Without a registered GP you may face delays accessing routine care and repeat prescriptions, and have to use walk-in or urgent services in the meantime.
